What is Accounting?
Accounting is the study of how organizations track income and assets.
The School of Accountancy offers a four-year program leading to a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree and a fully integrated five-year accounting program leading to the master of professional accountancy (M.P.A.) degree. The School of Accountancy programs are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), a distinction held for nearly 50 years.
Careers in Accounting
Accountants work in many sectors: public accounting firms, government, corporations and private business. Positions are available as staff auditors (checking accounting ledgers and financial statements); budget analysis (developing and managing financial plans); management accounting (cost analysis, analysis of new contracts, and participation in efforts to control expenses); and tax accounting (preparing corporate and personal income tax statements and formulating tax strategies involving issues such as financial choice, how to best treat a merger or acquisition, deferral of taxes, when to expense items). In addition, colleges and universities are in need of professors to teach the many specialties of accounting, which will likely require a terminal degree such as the doctor of business administration (D.B.A.) offered at Louisiana Tech.
High school and pre-preparation
Upon admission to the university, students can apply to the College of Business degree programs. Generally, students who have an overall, attempted GPA of 2.0 or higher are admitted. Examples of high school courses that serve as a good foundation for college-level business courses include: Algebra I, II and III; applied math III; business computer applications; calculus; comparable advanced math; computer science; discrete math; pre-calculus; probability and statistics, etc.
