What is a B.A. in French?
The Department of Foreign Languages offers a four-year program leading to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in French. The degree provides students with mastery of the French language, Francophone cultures and literatures. The primary focus of the degree program is in communicative proficiency, which includes oral and writing proficiency, listening comprehension, understanding of literary forms and periods, and an appreciation of French-speaking cultures.
Careers in French
Graduates in French pursue a variety of careers as translators, interpreters, teachers, diplomats, linguists, international business consultants, and employees in international political and educational organizations such as the United Nations and the International Institute for Education. Any area in which the French and English languages intersect provides opportunities for French majors, including computer systems analysis, machine translation, customs inspection, travel agencies and services, transportation industry, foreign service, investigative and intelligence services, immigration and naturalization agencies, journalism (as foreign correspondents), Peace Corps service and training, international public relations, international marketing and retailing, tourist services, specialty library services, technical writing (as translators of operators' manuals), textbook publishing (as authors and editors of textbooks for teaching French), social welfare (as specialists working with refugees and immigrants from Francophone Africa and the Caribbean), and law enforcement (as officers in French-speaking enclaves).
High school and pre-preparation
Students who have been admitted to the university may elect to major in French without any prior knowledge or study of the language. However, those students who have successfully completed four years of high school French may be able to earn up to 12 hours of French by taking the credit/placement exam. Such students have the advantage of bypassing the first four quarters of French and beginning their study at the intermediate level. High school courses that provide knowledge and skills of benefit to a French major are world history, European history, world literature, geography, art, music, dance and theater.
