What is History?
History is the study of human experience in the past. In the centuries-old tradition of liberal arts education, students of history pursue greater knowledge and understanding of the range, diversity and significance of human events, ideas and accomplishments in different ages and cultures. At the same time, they work to strengthen specific individual skills in research, analysis and communication, both oral and written. The Department of History offers a four-year degree leading to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in History.
Careers for History graduates
The History major is excellent preparation for a wide variety of professional opportunities. All employers value the research, analysis and communications skills that liberal arts graduates possess, and history majors find work with federal and state agencies as well as in commercial and industrial enterprises and the not-for-profit sector. Many History majors pursue advanced study, including graduate study in History in preparation for careers in teaching or in museums and historical preservation, law school, seminary, information science and many other fields.
High school and pre-preparation
Any broad college preparatory high school curriculum will provide a good background for the History major. Emphasis on history, geography, literature, writing and foreign-language study is valuable, but so is course work in mathematics, science and especially computer skills.
