What is Journalism?
Journalism is the reporting of news through various media. The Department of Journalism offers a four-year degree leading to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Journalism.
Careers in Journalism
A Journalism degree prepares students for perhaps a wider variety of careers than any other major. Many of Louisiana Tech’s Journalism graduates are practicing journalists working as reporters, editors, anchors and news directors at newspapers, magazines and television stations across the United States. Others enjoy successful careers in public relations and Web design. Still others have found success as educators, ministers, lawyers and judges, evidence of how the journalistic skills of research, writing and critical thinking are valuable in many disciplines and professions.
About the Journalism program
Louisiana Tech’s Journalism program provides a strong emphasis on writing in its classes and in work on The Tech Talk, the university’s award-winning student newspaper. Most students also gain valuable experience through internships, many of which are awarded on a nationally competitive basis. Additionally, a minor of the student’s choosing can provide a strong background in a second academic discipline.
High school and pre-preparation
Any student admitted to the university is eligible to enroll as a Journalism major. High school courses that help prepare a student for success in journalism include English (both composition and literature) and journalism. Work on a high school yearbook or newspaper can also be useful.
