Degree: Bachelor of Science
What is Medical Technology?
Medical technologists (often called clinical laboratory scientists) develop and perform a broad range of laboratory tests that are essential to the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of many diseases. They are held accountable for the accuracy of test results and have the knowledge of biology, chemistry and pathology necessary to interpret the tests. They also consult with other professionals as to the medical significance of these procedures. Medical technologists are an integral part of the health-care management team and routinely work with other health-care professionals to develop and implement health-care policy.
Careers in Medical Technology
Most medical technologists are employed in hospital laboratories. Others are employed in private medical laboratories, clinics, the armed forces, governmental health agencies, pharmaceutical houses, research facilities and as industry consultants.
Advancement opportunities
Medical Technology opens the door to many other professional and educational opportunities. Additional training prepares students for jobs in medical management, clinical sciences, section supervision, research coordination, epidemiology, and education.
