Since 1894, Louisiana Tech University has built up quite a few traditions. Like during football season, Tech holds Bark Practice on Thursday night before every home game. Students gather on the practice field and listen to players and coaches, and also work on a few cheers with the spirit groups and the Band of Pride. (Students are a huge fan base for Bulldog athletics. Your Tech ID gets you into all of the games!) You heard the story of the Tech XIX Bulldog, but another great tradition is the “Spirit of ‘88” bulldog. In 1988, Tech moved to Division IA athletics. That division change wasn’t nearly as successful as the recent move into the Western Athletic Conference. In fact, the football team lost every game that first year. The Orientation Leaders made a campaign to the student body to let the players know that they were still supported, regardless of the losing streak. As a tribute, a bronze bulldog was cast and it sits on a pedestal at the south end zone of Joe Aillet Football Stadium. The following season, the players started rubbing the head of the bulldog for good luck before each home game, and a replica was placed in the Student Center. Out of respect for the mascot and school pride, students also rub the head of the “Spirit of ‘88” bronze bulldog when they pass by it.
Each spring, Tech hosts another great tradition. Just before finals the University President, Dr. Dan Reneau, hosts a breakfast from 10:00 p.m. to midnight. The President’s Midnight Breakfast attracts hundreds of students for food, fellowship, and a much deserved break from studying. The president and faculty serve the breakfast while the Jazz Ensemble plays music to soothe tired minds, and provide opportunities for some dancing.
This is just a small taste of the many traditions that Tech students take pride in. At summer Orientation, student leaders will share these and other traditions with you. From the ghost that haunts the university theater to holding up the number 1 while singing the Alma Mater, you’ll get to know the traditions that form the Spirit of Tech.
