Louisiana Tech University Intramural Sports (in•tra•myúr-l) n. – Sports such as flag football, soccer, softball, basketball, and volleyball that any student can participate in. You’ll take on other on-campus teams instead of competing against other universities.
If you enjoy playing sports for recreation and fun, then intramurals are for you. These games are organized by the Maxie Lambright Intramural Center staff and are played throughout the year. There are 17 different intramural sports, some of which are mentioned above. Or, maybe you prefer non-contact intramurals—like pool, horseshoes, golf, and bowling?
Signing up is a cinch; anyone can play. Men and women play in separate leagues, and most of the sports are divided into brackets based on the organizations. There are dorm, independent, departmental, and Greek divisions.
To play for your dorm, add your name to the sign-up sheet in your hall, or see your Resident Assistant. This is a great way to meet the people you live with and an easy way to stay updated on which sports are being offered at particular times. You can also play in the independent bracket by signing up at the Intramural Center for individual sports or organizing a team of your own. This is popular in flag football and softball. Men and women form teams with friends. Departmental teams are also very popular. Most on-campus organizations form teams to participate in many of the sports that are available. Some of these include the religious organizations, ROTC, and honor and academic societies. A lot of these organizations have an intramural director who will post sign-up sheets, organize teams and submit the team’s roster to the Intramural Center. The Greek teams are the final bracket. If you join a sorority or fraternity, you’ll have the option of playing for their leagues and signing up at weekly meetings.
Playing intramurals is a great way to get involved on campus. Also, you’ll stay in shape and be active. You’ll meet lots of people and bond with them through practices and games. If you aren’t interested in playing, you can always support your dorm or organization’s team by cheering them on in the stands.
