Dr. Larry Sellers

Are you a survivor?
For the record, he’s not a fan of CBS’ “Survivor.” Yet, Dr. Larry Sellers gives his “Survivor” speech to freshmen because it reflects the reality of getting accepted to pre-professional programs. “If you develop ‘Survivor’ skills, you’ll have a better chance of getting in,” says the professor of biological sciences.
While Dr. Sellers is an entomologist, (hence the bugs in his lab), his passion is helping students realize their dreams of becoming physicians, dentists, optometrists, and physical therapists. His class, Biology Connection, guides sophomores through the necessary steps to apply to these programs. One topic concerns the infamous personal statement that each student must write. They sometimes begin with: I’ve always wanted to be a doctor …
“Stop! That’s not something you want to say in your personal statement. However, I’ll give you topics that you will want to address,” says Dr. Sellers, who has taught at Tech for 31 years. “The greatest reward is when former students come back years later to say ‘thank you.’ And M.D. is after their name.” |
