“What about my major?” you might ask. After all, that is the reason we chose to attend a university. In this piece, we will discuss what a major is and how to get one if you don’t already have one in mind. A major, as we like to call it, is the name of what you desire to study. For instance, say you always wanted to be a doctor; well your major would be Pre Medicine-Biology. At the bottom of this page there is a link to every college within Louisiana Tech University. And within every college is where you discover a major. I encourage you, if you haven’t already, to browse around the different college links and check out a few majors that might interest you. In addition to the different college links, there is also a link to a page that contains all of the undergraduate majors available at Louisiana Tech. Check it out!
Maybe you were like me. I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I began as a student. Oh yeah, I was going to be an Athletic Trainer. So, I began my study in biology. I was able to look online at the University Bulletin (catalog) and the college pages and determine what classes I would be taking. (Don’t worry if you can’t figure this out. At Summer Orientation they explain the whole thing to you.) Over the next few years, I ended up looking in the bulletin a few times; I changed my major 3 times. I soon learned that the average college student changes their major three times, so it wasn’t that big of a deal. I finally found something that I would enjoy doing, not only in school, but after I graduated also.
If after looking at all the majors Tech has to offer, you still are not sure which one fits you best; you can begin you Freshman year as an Undecided major. Starting Tech undecided allows you to take the basic classes- Math, Science, History, etc.- that you need for every major and give you a little time to talk to other students and professors about the different areas of study. The University Counseling Center also hosts Career Decision-Making Workshops during Summer Orientation and during the school year. This workshop allows you determine your likes and dislikes when picking a job, and helps to narrow down your future career options.
A small piece of advice:
Pick a major and job that will make you happy, not necessarily what seems to be the hot job right now. You will enjoy work later on knowing you love what you do. After all, over half of you waking hours will eventually be spent at work.
