Northern Louisiana GIS Organizational Meeting

s

Louisiana Tech University and Lincoln Parish are hosting a GIS informational meeting to discuss the possibility of creating a North Louisiana GIS Network, an organization for promoting the use of GIS in Parish government.

When:  February 7, 2007, 10:00 AM until Noon

Where:  Louisiana Tech University, Spatial Data Lab, Room 2, Lomax Hall

Who:  Anyone interested in developing GIS in Northern Louisiana

GIS is useful in local governments in many ways:

  • Reapportionment – funding for state, census data
  • Economic development
  • Emergency preparedness, fire-police-ambulance
  • Parcel information – attorneys, real estate sates and appraisals, banks, timber industry, oil and gas industry
  • Assessor’s tool – property tax funding for local government – schools, roads and bridges, fire protection, library, law enforcement, flood control, etc.
  • Effective use of tax dollars
  • Crime analysis, traffic accidents, road signage management

Current roadblocks to developing GIS in northern Louisiana include: Funding, Lack of Data, Need for GIS training, and Lack of central leadership for GIS development.  In an effort to break these roadblocks, an organizational meeting will be held at Louisiana Tech University to create a GIS Network in northern Louisiana.  The main functions of the network will be to promote and provide education on GIS, to seek out Federal Funding, and help Parishes in the process of developing their own GIS.

By working as a group, northern Louisiana Parishes can gain access to the latest technology for geographic analysis and mapping.  We can leverage Federal Dollars to our advantage for economic development and more efficient community services.

Come to the meeting, discuss your needs, and find out ways we can help each other out.

Please send an email to dlong@latech.edu with your name and address if you plan to attend.  We welcome anyone interested in developing GIS.
