Career Development Plan for First Year/Exploring Students in
College University Setting

Louisiana Tech University and Counseling and Career Services is committed to providing resources for all students who are undecided in their major or occupational choice.  Throughout the freshman year, we have a "plan" to provide resources that may help in the career decision making process.  Students may use any one or all of these activities in a sequence for your career development and career decision making.

With the Summer Orientation Program...

  • Career Directions is a three (3) hour interactive group experience led by a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) that explores factors that should be considered to make a decision about a college major or occupational choice.  Factors include interests, hobbies, skills and abilities, values, and family influences.

During the Fall Quarter...

Career Coaching 101, a career development component led by a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), will be offered in each section of University Seminar (UNIV) 100 for "Undecided Majors" and (UNIV) 101 "Academic Skills Enhancement."  This component provides using two class sessions for each class of 20-25 students.  The curriculum for Career Coaching 101 includes the influences on career and lifestyle satisfaction, understanding, the Holland Hexagon, the World of Work Map (eDiscover), Louisiana Tech Majors by Holland Code, and developing an action plan.

  • eDiscoverTM - a comprehensive developmental guidance process to help users identify their strengths and needs, make good career decisions, and build a plan based on personal profiles, Also includes, a complete, current databases about occupations and college majors.

During the Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters...

A career decision making group called the "Vision Group" and Career Decision Making Workshops will be offered during fall, winter, and spring quarters.  The format will provide for self assessment in the areas of skills and abilities, work interest, personality type and work related values, assistance in compiling list of occupational options, and access to current career information to assess career options.

During the Winter and Spring Quarter...

EDCI 289B - Introduction to Career Development- This 2 hour (for credit) course provides students with an opportunity to learn and develop the necessary skills to engage in life/career planning.  Participants in the course will learn career concepts and applications focusing on self-assessment, occupational exploration, and decision-making.  Participants will also evaluate social conditions affecting career development, focusing on social, economic, family, and organizational changes affecting careers.  Finally, participants will implement a strategic career plan, possessing employability skills and strategies for implementing academic/career development plans.
