The Louisiana Tech University Career Center operates within the framework of all federal and state laws which pertain to the employment process.  In addition, it functions within the guidelines of all policies of the University and the Division of Student Affairs.  Internal policies and procedures have been developed and are reviewed periodically for updating as necessary.  A special effort is made to set all policies and conduct all programs in accordance with the professional standards of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education and the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

Students who are pursuing a degree from Louisiana Tech University are guaranteed access to all services and resources of the Career Center on a fair and equitable basis. Alumni of Louisiana Tech University may also utilize the services and resources within three years of graduation.  Services are provided at no charge.  All student/alumni records are handled with confidentiality, in accordance with the requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEWS

Students who are within a year of graduation and/or graduates of Louisiana Tech University are eligible to participate in the on-campus interview program.  Several companies also offer career-related summer employment, co-op, and internship opportunities to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.

All students should register with the Career Center when they are within one year of graduation.  Students who are seeking summer/internship employment may register earlier.  Registration procedures are as follows:

• Complete a Records Release Authorization at the Career Center (Keeny Hall 337).
• Provide the Career Center with a current unofficial transcript, which must be updated quarterly.
• Register in the Experience/TechJobWeb at http://latech.erecruiting.com/er/security/login.jsp.  Students can obtain a user name and a password from the Career  Center. They must also complete an on-line profile and upload a resume. Complete instructions are provided on the Career Center Web page.  Click on Students and then click Experience Student Guide.  When you choose to utilize TechJobWeb, you are granting the Louisiana Tech University Career Center permission to release your information, including your resume and unofficial transcript, to prospective employers that are recruiting at Louisiana Tech.

Pre-employment photographs: The Louisiana Tech University Career Center does not support the use of pre-employment photographs in the campus recruitment programs. This includes requests for photographs with resumes and/or applications and requests for photographs in connnection with on-campus interviews.

SIGN-ON PROCEDURES FOR ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEWS

All interview schedules are processed on-line and are powered by Experience/eRecruiting/TechJobWeb.  For open schedules, interview sign-on sheets are posted as they are received.  Students who are registered in the Experience TechJobWeb may sign the schedules on a first-come basis and should meet all company requirements before signing for an interview.  Prior to the interview, the Career Center provides the employer with copies of the students’ resumes and unofficial transcripts.  If company applications are to be completed, students are advised to complete and return them to the Career Center two days prior to the interview date.

Preselection schedules will be administered  according to instructions from each company.  Students who have an interest in being considered for an interview may submit a resume in the Experience eRecruiting on-line system.  Company representatives review the documents, select the candidates to be interviewed, and notify the Career Center of the selections.  The Career Center staff will, in turn, notify students of their selections.  Students then choose an interview time and sign the schedule on-line.

Resume referrals are also available to students who publish their resumes in the Resume Books which are a component of Experience eRecruiting.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CANDIDATE

When an on-campus interview is scheduled, a commitment has been made to the employer; therefore, the candidate is expected to honor the commitment.  If, for some reason, an interview commitment cannot be kept, the Career Center should be contacted as soon as possible–at least 48 hours in advance–in order for staff to schedule another candidate.  “No shows” and insufficient notices of cancellation may jeopardize future interviewing privileges.  Each case is considered on its own merits.

Interviewees are required to check in with the Career Center personnel a few minutes prior to interview time.  Business dress is recommended.

Company representatives are requested to provide the Career Center with current literature which is made available for student use. The Career Center also provides links to company Web sites.  Students should research company material and Web sites prior to interviews.

JOB LISTINGS

Job listings for full-time, part-time, and internship positions are available to students who are pursuing a degree from Louisiana Tech University.  Alumni are also eligible to access the listings within three years after graduation. Students and alumni may review job listings in the Career Center binders or by registering to utilize the Web program.  For instructions on registering to access the on-line job listings, please refer to the Experience Student Guide.

All job listings from employers must include the name of the employer. No blind ads will be posted.

Third-party recruiters may request Career Center assistance through the job listings program. They may place job listings with the Career Center if they provide the name and address of the company, the title and location of the position, and a description of the position for which they are recruiting. The listing, without the company identification, will be placed in a binder for student access.  Students and alumni will be instructed to contact the third-party recruiter to apply for the position that is listed.

CAREER DAYS/TEACHER RECRUITMENT DAY

Attendance at Career Day is limited to students who are pursuing a degree from Louisiana Tech and who are classified as sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students, or alumni of Tech.  For Teacher Recruitment Day, attendance is recommended for juniors, seniors, graduate students, and alumni.

Seminars on resume writing and interviewing are offered prior to the events.  A special seminar, “Resumania,” is sponsored by the Career Center prior to the fall Career Days.  Students are strongly encouraged to attend these sessions.  Business dress is recommended for Career Days and Teacher Recruitment Day.

CAREER LIBRARY

Use of the Career Library, located in Keeny Hall 337, is available to students who are currently pursuing a degree from Louisiana Tech University and Tech alumni.  Most videos and printed materials in the Library are restricted to in-house use.  Materials which can be checked out are marked and housed in a special section.  The check-out time is two days.

Students requesting copies of select printed material may receive a maximum of ten copies.  Additional copies may be obtained through special check-out procedures which permit students to take the resource(s) to Prescott Library for duplication.  A driver's license or Tech ID will be held until materials are returned.  Materials must be returned within two hours.

First-time users of the Career Library are requested to provide an evaluation form.
