Paraprofessional Cane Travel Training
Information
The Professional Development and Research Institute on Blindness (PDRIB) at Louisiana Tech University is offering a Paraprofessional Certificate in Cane Travel through the Division of Continuing Education. The Paraprofessional Cane Travel Training certificate is a 60-75 clock hour training program consisting of four modules to teach fundamentals of basic orientation and mobility under the Structured Discovery Cane Travel model. The TRAINING provides basic body of knowledge related to cane travel, personal non-visual instruction, an apprenticeship opportunity, and an internship experience. The individual who satisfactorily completes all four modules of training will have demonstrated competence in basic cane travel instruction, and will be granted the Paraprofessional Cane Travel Certificate.
The TRAINING is not a professional certification, but rather is a certificate training program that insures fundamental instruction to prepare parents, teachers, and other paraprofessionals with competence to teach basic cane travel to children and adults. The training includes basic cane techniques, simple route-based travel, structured discovery approaches, basic street crossings, and other skills needed for safe and effective mobility around the home and school.
Requirements
The four modules are listed below, and must occur in a sequential fashion. The total package can occur at one time over a two week interval, or the modules may be spread out over time, however, all modules (1-4) must be taken within 15 months of each other. Note: all costs associated with transportation, lodging, and materials (e.g., white cane and sleep shades) are the responsibility of the trainee and are not included in these fees.
The four modules and requirements are as follows:
Module 1: SDCT Body of Knowledge (5 hours)
Module 1 consists of five (5) clock hours of lecture on Structured Discovery Cane Travel methods, principles, nomenclature, and knowledge related to safe and effective practice. Written assignments will be required.
Time and Location: By Arrangement
Cost: $99.00
Module 2: Personal, Nonvisual Training (25 hours)
Module 2 consists of twenty five (25) hours of personal, nonvisual training with the use of a long, white cane. The purpose of module 2 is to provide sufficient instruction under blindfold to the trainee in order to overcome basic fears, and to show by example the efficacy of cane travel. Note: extra hours may be required by the instructor depending on demonstrated effectiveness.
Time and Location: By Arrangement
Cost: $149.00
Module 3: SDCT Apprenticeship (15 hours)
Module 3 consists of fifteen (15) hours of instruction on how to teach SDCT cane techniques, methods, and principles. Instruction will be conducted by a National Orientation and Mobility Certified (NOMC) instructor, who will teach the skills, model instructional practices, and work with the trainee as an apprentice instructor.
Time and Location: By Arrangement
Cost: $149.00
Module 4: SDCT Internship (15 hours)
Module 4 consists of fifteen (15) hours of experience teaching SDCT methods and principles to children and/or adults. All teaching will be directly supervised by a National Orientation and Mobility Certified (NOMC) instructor. The instructor will provide guidance, instruction, and supervision. Note: the NOMC may determine that additional hours are needed in order to demonstrate safe and effective instructional practice.
Time and Location: By Arrangement
Cost: $149.00
Total Package: (60-75 hours)
All four modules may be conducted during a two week intensive training program. The entire package must be done at an orientation center that is (1) approved by the National Blindness Professional Certification Board (NBPCB); and (2) where a National Orientation and Mobility Certified instructor (NOMC) is available to conduct instruction and supervision. Training will consist of all activities captured under modules 1-4.
Time and Location: By Arrangement
Cost: $495.00
