Schroeder

Professor Ray Schroeder is a Professor Emeritus of Communication, Chair of the Sloan NCLC, and Director of the Office of Technology-Enhanced Learning (OTEL) at the University of Illinois at Springfield.  As founding Director of OTEL, he initiated the online learning program at UIS and is dedicated to faculty development and pedagogical support of the online initiative.

Dr. Schroeder will explore trends toward technology transparency by focusing on the evolutionary process to make new instructional technologies simpler, intuitive, and less obtrusive.  He will address the positive impact these new technologies have on the teaching and learning process.

Pre-registered TECH Faculty can attend a workshop introducing the newest digital technologies used in online education.  The workshop will also focus on the Sloan-C Five "Pillars" for Quality Online Education blended with elements of the Quality Matters Rubric for course design.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Burks Oakley II

Dr. Oakley
Dr. Burks Oakley II is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and is a Visiting Research Professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield.  Through his use of technology in teaching, Professor Oakley has earned a national reputation as a practioner and promoter of Internet-based asynchronous learning environments.

The term Web 2.0 refers to a perceived second generation of web-based technologies, such as Wikis, Blogs, Podcasting, RSS Feeds, and Folksonomies, which facilitate collaboration and sharing among students and instructors.  Dr. Oakley explored how these technologies are being used in higher education and elaborated on the impact of these technologies on teaching and learning.

Workshop

TECH Faculty attended a sampler workshop conducted by Dr. Oakley on the new technologies that are changing the ways in which the Web is being used in higher education.  The hands-on workshop provided an understanding of the potential of Blogging, Wikis, and Podcasting for building community and engaging learners.
