Chemistry Welcome to the Chemistry program web page of Louisiana Tech University. The Chemistry program is a component of the multi- disciplinary College of Engineering and Science at Louisiana Tech. The third floor and part of the second floor of Carson-Taylor Hall house the Chemistry program offices, lecture halls, and laboratories. Chemistry faculty also have close associations with, and use facilities at, the Institute for Micromanufacturing on the main campus. Our Chemistry program includes eight faculty members with PhD's and one faculty member with an MS degree. The Chemistry faculty by discipline number analytical chemistry (one), biochemistry (one), inorganic chemsitry (three), organic chemistry (two), and physical chemistry (two). The Chemistry program has 35 BS chemistry majors and 10 MS chemistry graduate students. Three chemistry graduate students are pursuing the interdisciplinary PhD in Applied Computation and Modeling. Our faculty take pride in the high quality of the undergraduate chemistry program, certified by the American Chemical Society. Approximately 5 to 8 chemistry majors have graduated per year during the past several years. A chemistry major takes one of two tracks: an ACS-approved track or a Pre-Med/Pre-Dent alternative track. The two tracks are parallel until the Junior/Senior year. The ACS-track focuses on additional upper division chemistry course requirements and more research experience. The Pre-Med/Pre-Dent track offers the opportunity to earn a BS in Chemistry by taking core chemistry courses that are supplemented with such courses as two semesters of biological science, two semesters of biochemistry, and one semester of cell biology, genetics, and comparative anatomy. The biological science courses serve to prepare Pre-Med/Pre-Dent chemistry majors for the MCAT and DAT exams. The BS in Chemistry degree offers a number of career options. Such options include attending medical or dental school, pursuing graduate study in chemistry, working in industrial and government laboratories, or teaching in the public schools. The eight Chemistry Program faculty members work closely with students in the classroom, and in teaching and research laboratories as well. A significant number of chemistry majors participate in research with faculty members. Some students start doing research as early as the sophomore year.
