Transfer Students
Transfer students are advised within their program areas unless they have not selected a specific engineering discipline, in which case the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies advises them. Advising of transfer students is based primarily on their math background. Since the academic preparation of transfer students is highly variable, each student must be considered on a case-by-case basis. However, a transfer student will generally fall into one of the following three categories:
Category 1: Students who have not yet begun calculus
Students who have not yet begun calculus are required to enroll in the integrated sequence of math, chemistry, and engineering courses the same as an entering freshman at Louisiana Tech. The majority of our transfer students fall into this category. Most often students will have transfer credit for general education courses, such as English, history, sociology, etc. These students are encouraged to take advantage of the increased flexibility resulting from having credit for some of their general education courses. Depending on their goals, these students are often advised to consider pursuing a minor along with the engineering degree.
Category 2: Students who have credit for one or two calculus courses
Students who transfer to Louisiana Tech having successfully completed some of their calculus courses are placed in the appropriate-level math class. The math program offers assistance in evaluating students' transcripts to determine which math courses to accept for transfer credit. These students are still required to enroll in ENGR 122 to insure that they receive some of the same experiences as our own freshman engineering students. ENGR 122 is a two-semester credit course that includes a design project as well as a focus on team skills and presentation skills and an introduction to engineering economics and electrical circuits. In addition these students are required to attend a Tau Beta Pi Futures Workshop that includes additional topics on team skills and leadership skills, very similar to material that is included in the rest of our freshman integrated engineering sequence. Students are awarded one-semester credit hour for this workshop. Coupled with ENGR 122, this gives transfer students three-semester credit hours of the six-hour ENGR 120, 121, 122 sequence. The other three hours is taken as a technical elective. We believe this approach is better for transfer students who have already demonstrated a reasonable level of maturity by successfully completing a significant portion of their math requirements before entering Louisiana Tech.
Category 3: Students who have transfer credit for the entire calculus sequence and some engineering credit
Because these students are more mature and are considerably further along academically, ENGR 122 will be optional. However, they will still be required to participate in the Tau Beta Pi Futures Workshop. These students will be required to take six hours of technical electives instead of the ENGR 120/121/122 sequence. Unless the transferred math courses contain a significant amount of statistics, these students will be required to take a statistics class. Transfer credit for an engineering course is awarded only if the course was taken at an ABET-accredited institution, and then only if the student can provide documentation to demonstrate that the course being transferred is equivalent to an appropriate Louisiana Tech engineering course.
