Directed Electives for Fall Quarter

MEEN 434

Cryogenic Systems

11:00 - 12:15 MWF

Dr. Barron

MEEN 478

Engineering Acoustics

8:00 - 9:15 MWF

Dr. Barron

Selected courses from mathematics and other engineering programs can serve as directed electives. Please discuss specific courses with your advisor before registering; a petition should be filed for any non MEEN or MEMT directed elective. At least one of your directed electives must be a mechanical engineering course.

Senior Lab Moved to Winter Quarter

MEEN 486 - Mechanical Engineering Laboratory will be taught in the winter quarter instead of the spring quarter this year based on the recommendation of students taking the course last spring. MEEN 486 will not be taught in the spring, so please register for the course now if you plan to graduate this year.

Directed Electives for Spring Quarter

We anticipate that MEEN 475 - Mechatronics, MEEN 450C - Durability of Materials, and MSE 405 - Nanotechnology Principles will be offered in the spring quarter of 2008.

Prerequisites

Be sure to check the course descriptions for prerequisite information in the University Catalog at http://www.latech.edu/registrar/bulletin/2007-2008/partiv.pdf. In particular, freshman and sophomore students should be aware of the MATH 240-244 minimum GPA requirement of 2.0 on all attempts to enter MEEN 332, MEEN 351, MEEN 382, and MEMT 313. A minimum GPA of 2.0 in MATH 240-243 is required for entry into MEMT 212.

Transition Courses for MEEN Majors

The mechanical engineering curriculum increased by six semester hours beginning in the fall of 2007. These six hours will be allocated as follows:

Original Course

New Course

MEEN 334 - Thermodynamics II (2 hours)

MEEN 332 - Thermodynamics II (3 hours)

MEEN 465 - Machine Element Design (2 hours)

MEEN 462 - Machine Element Design (3 hours)

MEMT 211 - Intermediate Mechanics of Materials (2 hours)

MEMT 212 - Intermediate Statics & Mechanics of Materials (3 hours)

MEEN 475 - Mechatronics (3 hours)

The "new courses" will be taught for the first time during the 2007-2008 academic year. Students who entered before fall of 2008 will take MEEN 332, MEEN 462 and MEMT 212 unless they have already completed the corresponding "original course." The original courses will no longer be taught.

Students who take MEEN 332, MEEN 462 and MEMT 212 will only be required to take one directed elective. MEEN 475 - Mechatronics can serve as this designated elective, or the student can choose another MEEN or MEMT designated elective. Students who complete fewer than three of the new courses (MEEN 332, MEEN 462 and MEMT 212) will be required to take two designated electives.
