Pi Tau Sigma is the international Mechanical Engineering Honor Society. Eligibility is based on academic standing and depth of character. Juniors must be in the top quarter of their class and Seniors in the top third of their class. The character based eligibility comes in the form of a chapter vote, the requirement of participation in a community-oriented project, and the successful polishing of a bronze bent. Finally, there is a one-time lifetime membership fee of $60. Of this, $25 is used to sponsor chapter activities and purchase associate member materials. These tasks are well worth the effort and resources, as a selection in this program is a great honor. You'll find that many of your favorite Mechanical Engineering professors were undergraduate members and have signed the same roll book that you potentially will.
History
In the winter of 1956, Professor J. J. Thigpen and Professor E. L. Dunning called a meeting of eligible mechanical engineering students to discuss Pi Tau Sigma at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute. A petition presented to the National Council was approved by the chapters. Louisiana Tech Tau Xi Chapter was formally installed on April 23, 1957, by the National President C. M. Leonard and National Secretary-Treasurer D. S. Clark.
The members to Tau Xi Chapter have set about to foster the high ideals of Pi Tau Sigma Honor Fraternity through its actions. The Louisiana Tech Tau Xi Chapter sponsors many activities during the school year. Some of these activities have included Spring Social which members and eligible candidates can get acquainted, projects for the candidate class, and a banquet for all members.
