Abstract:
Myth and the Daimonic Voice in The Avignon Quintet
by
John Noel Lenzi
I wish to share with you questions and perspectives regarding the relationship
between the wrtier Aubrey Blanford and his internal voice made flesh, Rob
Sutcliffe, in The Avignon Quintet. Durrell has charted, in the daimonic
relationship between Blanford and Sutcliffe, a mythical sign map of the
process of writing fiction. I would further argue that the transformations
of the daimonic voice run parallel to Blanford’s physical healing as well.
That is, the daimonic healing process results in Blanford’s beginning to
write his novel while his physical healing leads to his “revived and tonified
. . . copulatory powers” (Quinx 13).
