Abstract:
The Pivotal Role of the Invert: A Comparison of the Quartets
of Lawrence Durrell and Paul Scott
by
F.S. and Jennifer L. Leonard
Two of the great quartets of the twentieth century, Lawrence Durrell’s
Alexandria
Quartet (1957-60) and Paul Scott’s Raj Quartet (1966-75), share
a remarkable set of features. These works exhibit a literary harmony
which is at once suprising and illuminating. Similar historical eras, star-crossed
love affairs, and structure are important commonalities, but the shared
critical choice of a particular kind of character, in a particular
kind of role, inextricably binds these two quartets together.
Deus Loci (1992): 91-96.
