Health and Physical Education - Teacher Preparation
Since the founding of the University, the education of teachers has been a primary aim of the institution. The professional teacher preparation curriculum is a carefully designed series of learning experiences that include coursework, clinical and field experiences and student teaching. Upon completion graduates are certified to teach grades in K - 12 in Health and Physical Education. Graduates are also prepared for coaching positions at the elementary, junior high and/or high school levels.
Our students have performed well on certification examinations such as PRAXIS and have a high success rate for admittance to graduate programs. Most importantly, our graduates have a high success rate in the job markets realizing their personal and professional goals in education and coaching.
Kinesiology and Health Promotion
There are two curricular tracks in this emphasis. Both programs prepare students for graduate school.
Health/Fitness Concentration - prepares graduates to work as exercise specialists and/or within management of community health/fitness programs, hospital/wellness programs, and the sports industry. Many of our students delay entering their careers until completion of a graduate degree in exercise science or sport management.
Clinical Concentration - prepares graduates for acceptance to graduate school programs in exercise science, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing. It also prepares graduates for careers in related areas such as athletic training, massage therapy, chiropractic, cardiac rehabilitation, and physician assistant.
