Research Opportunities and Financial Aid

Teaching and research assistantships are provided for all students who are admitted to the program. Assistantships require 20 hours of work per week in assigned roles/duties. Assistantships are for 12 months and provide an annual stipend of $10,000. Assistantships for students are available for four years. Typically, assistantships provide students with stipends and waiver of out-of-state tuition. To further enhance training, student assistantships are broken down into two training components. First year students on assistantship are assigned a faculty mentor and work with that faculty member conducting research and other duties as required to explore the field of counseling psychology. Second year students on assistantship are assigned to an instructor-training component and teach a section of introductory psychology for the whole academic year. Students participate in a weekly training seminar in teaching of psychology. Beyond the first two years of assistantship, students work with their advisor and the Director of Training to tailor assistantships to meet their individual needs and those of the Department and College.

Counseling psychology faculty are actively involved in a wide variety of research. Student involvement in research is required and reinforces the training of competent researchers. Faculty research areas of interest currently include: career development, psychological reactance, gender issues, student development and adjustment, multi-cultural counseling, counselor training and supervision, quality of life, rehabilitation and prevention, stress management, adaptability, family issues, group process and outcome, attachment theory, and lesbian/gay/bisexual issues. See the Faculty section or visit the recent publications and presentations for further information about faculty research interests.
