University and Community

Louisiana Tech University, a member of the State College and University system, is a comprehensive public university committed to the triumvirate of quality teaching, research and creative activity, along with public service. A selective admissions university, Louisiana Tech offers a broad range of fully accredited undergraduate degrees to qualified students from Louisiana, as well as from the region, the nation, and foreign countries. Integral to the purpose of the University is its expanding commitment to graduate-level education in its areas of strength. Louisiana Tech offers master’s degrees in a variety of areas and doctoral programs in specialized areas.



Louisiana Tech maintains as its highest priority the education of its students. To that end, it recruits faculty committed to teaching and advising, a student-oriented faculty dedicated to preparing students to achieve their goals in a rapidly changing economic and civic environment. The University provides extracurricular and athletic programs that foster and enrich the development of its students. In addition, it provides opportunities for interaction between students and the larger community. The University encourages students to regard learning as a lifelong process.

Louisiana Tech University currently enrolls over 10,000 students in a variety of programs from bachelors to doctorate. Admission to all programs, including the undergraduate school, are selective. The University offers a number of extracurricular features including all major sports, extensive athletic facilities, outstanding theatre offerings, and numerous on campus events found in a residential university.

Historically a teaching oriented institution, Louisiana Tech’s transition to graduate education has not come at the expense of instruction. Faculty members are required to maintain a minimum of two office hours per day, permitting ready contact with students. Teaching excellence is highly valued at the university for all faculty, undergraduate and graduate.

Louisiana Tech University also values research, with virtually all faculty engaged in research studies. Louisiana Tech has modern computer facilities. Internet access is available for classrooms, faculty offices, and laboratories. The Department of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences has a state-of-the-art computer/research laboratory for data analysis, research, and instruction.

The Community

Louisiana Tech University is located in the rolling hills of northern Louisiana, about 30 miles west of Monroe and 60 miles east of Shreveport. Ruston offers the pleasures of living in a small, university-oriented town situated in a geographically pleasing setting with easy interstate access to metropolitan areas such as Dallas/Fort Worth (a four hour drive) and Houston (six hours).

One of the world’s premiere tourist destinations, New Orleans, 300 miles to the south, offers superb food and entertainment in a historically significant environment. For those enjoying outdoor activities, the Ruston area offers excellent fishing, camping, a world-class moutain bike trail and refreshing country drives, including nearby Arkansas, whose border is only 30 minutes to the north. Hot Springs to the north and Vicksburg to the east provide easily accessible, interesting tourist destinations.

Ruston is a great place to live and work within an atmosphere that offers many cultural offerings. An outstanding natatorium and intramural sports facilities complement the University’s many fine physical facilities and programs.
