Human Services Program Curriculum

The Human Services program consists of a total of 33 credit-hours: 15 credit-hours of core academic coursework, 12 credit-hours of discretionary core courses, and six credit-hours of electives.

Core Academic Coursework

COUN 500 Principles and Administration of Guidance Services

Seminar focusing on counselor professional identity inclusive of knowledge, scholarship, and writing
standards.

COUN 508 Introduction to Counseling Theories

A detailed study of a selection of the best known schools of counseling theory.

COUN 529 Cross-Cultural Counseling

Investigation of the development of cultural identity and techniques for appropriate interactions with clients from different cultural groups.

COUN 590 Ethics and Professional Issues

An in-depth investigation of ethical and legal issues, as well as technical concerns, related to the professional practice of counseling.

PSYC 510 Principles of Human Development

Introduction to the research process with emphasis on design and basic statistical procedures used in research in Kinesiology.

3 hrs

In addition to core coursework, students must complete an additional 12 credit-hours of discretionary coursework. These courses are chosen from the course groups shown in the tables below.

COUN 505 Analysis of the Individual

This course offers students an orientation to psychological testing procedures, their interpretation, evaluations and use in the understanding of clients.

PSYC 541 Research and Statistical Methods in Behavioral Sciences

A study of the research and statistical commonly used in the Behavioral Sciences. Emphasis on quantitative methodology and APA writing style.

PSYC 543 Psychometrics

Test and measurement theory, including classical, true score, and item response theory models. Covers reliability, validity, scaling, norms, and score transforming issues.

PSYC 513 Organizational Psychology

A survey of current research and theories comprising organizational psychology. Critical-thinking skills are used to evaluate empirical research and current theories in the field

PSYC 523 Leadership and Decision Making

Examination of the various skills, behaviors, and attitudes required for effective leadership. Includes practices, decision-making, communication and ethical issues related to leadership.

COUN 502 Mental Health Counseling

Seminar focusing on counselor professional identity inclusive of knowledge, scholarship, and writing standards.

COUN 518 Techniques of Counseling

Provides an overview of counseling techniques and interview methods.

COUN 524 Diagnosis and Treatment Planning in Counseling

This course focuses on utilizing the DSM-IV-TR, mental status exam, treatment plans, etc.

COUN 527 Addiction Counseling

An introduction to the field of Addiction Counseling. Emphasis is placed on recognition and identification of the addicted as well as basic treatment techniques.

PSYC 513 Organizational Psychology

A survey of current research and theories comprising organizational psychology. Critical-thinking skills are used to evaluate empirical research and current theories in the field

PSYC 516 Personnel Psychology

Topics covered include the professional and legal requirements for personnel selection instruments; design and evaluation of personnel selection systems, designing and conducting job analyses and selection interviews.

PSYC 517 Training and Development

Provides the skills necessary to analyze, design, and evaluate training in organizations. Topics include determining training needs, task analysis, learning objectives, training methodologies, and evaluation.

PSYC 523 Leadership and Decision Making

Examination of the various skills, behaviors, and attitudes required for effective leadership. Includes practices, decision-making, communication and ethical issues related to leadership.

In addition, there are six hours of electives that must be completed from courses in the fields psychology, counseling, and/or management. These courses must be approved by your acadmeic advisor.

At the conclusion of all academic coursework, students must successfully complete a comprehensive examination. Students will not be allowed to begin practicum or internship work unless they have successfully completed all academic coursework and achieved a satisfactory score on their comprehensive examination.

Upon entering the program, you MUST submit a copy of your plan of study to the College of Education Office of Graduate Studies. No deviation from your plan of study will be permitted without expressed, written approval of your advisor and all relevant administrators (i.e.: Department Head, Dean of Graduate Studies, Dean, etc.)
