Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program Curriculum

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program consists of a total of 60 credit-hours: 51 credit-hours of academic coursework, three credit-hours of counseling practicum work totaling 100 clock-hours, and six credit-hours of internship totalling 600 clock-hours to be completed in at least two academic terms.

COUN 502 Mental Health Counseling

Seminar focusing on counselor professional identity inclusive of knowledge, scholarship, and writing
standards.

COUN 505 Analysis of the Individual

This course offers students an orientation to psychological testing procedures, their interpretation, evaluations and use in the understanding of clients.

COUN 508 Introduction to Counseling Theories

A detailed study of a selection of the best known schools of counseling theory.

COUN 513 Career Information and Career/Lifestyle Development

Provides an understanding of career development; occupational/educational information sources and systems; career and lifestyle counseling; career decision-making and instruments relevant to career planning.

COUN 516 Introduction to Group Processes

Emphasis is on providing students with a knowledge of group dynamics, and learning basic group counseling techniques under supervision.

COUN 517 Counseling Children and Adolescents

A review of contemporary literature and scientific research which deals with relevant, effective, and culturally sensitive techniques for working with children and adolescents..

Provides an overview of counseling techniques and interview methods.

COUN 524 Diagnosis and Treatment Planning in Counseling

This course focuses on utilizing the DSM-IV-TR, mental status exam, treatment
plans, etc.

COUN 527 Addiction Counseling

An introduction to the field of Addiction Counseling. Emphasis is placed on recognition and identification of the addicted as well as basic treatment techniques.

COUN 529 Cross-Cultural Counseling

Investigation of the development of cultural identity and techniques for appropriate interactions with clients from different cultural groups.

COUN 590 Ethics and Professional Issues

An in-depth investigation of ethical and legal issues, as well as technical concerns, related to the professional practice of counseling.

PSYC 510 Principles of Human Development

Biological, psychological, and cultural interrelationships in human development.

PSYC 512 Advanced Abnormal Psychology

Comprehensive review of the major characteristics, etiology, and implications for treatment of the major psychological disorders. Clinical and research findings are emphasized.

PSYC 541 Research and Statistical Methods in Behavioral Sciences

A study of the research and statistical commonly used in the Behavioral Sciences. Emphasis on quantitative methodology and APA writing style.

In addition to core coursework, students must complete an additional nine hours of electives. These electives are selected from Psychology and Counseling areas with the approval of your advisor. Recommended electives are listed in the table below.

Contemporary approaches to cognitive psychology; a broad survey of social cognition including attention, cognitive organization, mental reasoning, information processing, decision making, and human memory.

An overview of couples development and therapy.

An overview of family development and therapy.

Provides an understanding of forces, which propel learning and development and enables teachers to help students successfully meet the unique demands of school.

Special topic in theories and strategies of crisis intervention.

A study of the statistical methods used to study problems in Behavioral Sciences.

A review of contemporary literature which deals with the psychology of domestic violence.

Origins, development, and coping responses to predictable and unexpected crises of family systems in varied ecological settings.

An examination of legal issues associated with domestic violence.

At the conclusion of all academic coursework, students must successfully complete a comprehensive examination. Students will not be allowed to begin practicum or internship work unless they have successfully completed all academic coursework and achieved a satisfactory score on their comprehensive examination.

Practicum and Internship

COUN 534 Advanced Clinical Mental Health Counseling Practicum

Open only by application. Requires 100 clinical hours. Supervised progessional activity in a mental health setting.

COUN 535 Advanced Internship

Advanced supervised experience in a school or mental helath setting. Requires 300 clinical hours for each internship. This course must be taken twice (normally in back-to-back terms) to complete the total clinical requirements.

Upon entering the program, you MUST submit a copy of your plan of study to the College of Education Office of Graduate Studies. No deviation from your plan of study will be permitted without expressed, written approval of your advisor and all relevant administrators (i.e.: Department Head, Dean of Graduate Studies, Dean, etc.)
