School Counseling Program Curriculum

The School Counseling program consists of a total of 48 credit-hours: 39 credit-hours of academic coursework, three credit-hours of counseling practicum work totaling 100 clock-hours, and six credit-hours of internship totalling 600 clock-hours to be completed in at least two academic terms.

COUN 500 Principles and Administration of Guidance Services

An overview of the current principles and practices involved in various types of guidance and counseling services.

COUN 501 Advanced School Counseling

An in-depth and culminating course designed to bridge together all aspects of becoming a school counselor; focuses on the ASCA model.

COUN 505 Analysis of the Individual

This course offers students an orientation to psychological testing procedures, their interpretation, evaluations and use in the understanding of clients.

COUN 508 Introduction to Counseling Theories

A detailed study of a selection of the best known schools of counseling theory.

COUN 513 Career Information and Career/Lifestyle Development

Provides an understanding of career development; occupational/educational information sources and systems; career and lifestyle counseling; career decision-making and instruments relevant to career planning.

COUN 516 Introduction to Group Processes

Emphasis is on providing students with a knowledge of group dynamics, and learning basic group counseling techniques under supervision.

COUN 517 Counseling Children and Adolescents

A review of contemporary literature and scientific research which deals with relevant, effective, and culturally sensitive techniques for working with children and adolescents..

COUN 518 Techniques of Counseling

Provides an overview of counseling techniques and interview methods.

COUN 529 Cross-Cultural Counseling

Investigation of the development of cultural identity and techniques for appropriate interactions with clients from different cultural groups.

COUN 590 Ethics and Professional Issues

An in-depth investigation of ethical and legal issues, as well as technical concerns, related to the professional practice of counseling.

PSYC 510 Principles of Human Development

Biological, psychological, and cultural interrelationships in human development.

PSYC 541 Research and Statistical Methods in Behavioral Sciences

A study of the research and statistical commonly used in the Behavioral Sciences. Emphasis on quantitative methodology and APA writing style.

PSYC 512 Advanced Abnormal Psychology

Recommended elective. Comprehensive review of the major characteristics, etiology, and implications for treatment of the major psychological disorders. Clinical and research findings are emphasized.

At the conclusion of all academic coursework, students must successfully complete a comprehensive examination. Students will not be allowed to begin practicum or internship work unless they have successfully completed all academic coursework and achieved a satisfactory score on their comprehensive examination.

Practicum and Internship

COUN 533 Advanced School Counseling Practicum

Supervised progessional activity in school setting.

COUN 535 Advanced Internship

Advanced supervised experience in a school or mental helath setting. Requires 300 clinical hours for each internship.

Upon entering the program, you MUST submit a copy of your plan of study to the College of Education Office of Graduate Studies. No deviation from your plan of study will be permitted without expressed, written approval of your advisor and all relevant administrators (i.e.: Department Head, Dean of Graduate Studies, Dean, etc.)
