April 16, 2007
Dr. Henry Cardenas and SHOT a company located in Southern Indiana have received a Phase II SBIR grant from the army. Dr. Cardenas will receive $39,903.00 to continue his research in the field of concrete durability. He is currently partnered with SHOT and another company Osmotech. SHOT is primarily interested in the sealing of concrete and the development of treatment application equipment. Osmotech, located in Chesterfield, MO, is licensing the technology to develop methods for strengthening concrete and protecting it against corrosion. This is accomplished through deep, electrokinetic transport of restorative nanoparticles. Osmotech has a long term relationship with the army and is the exclusive provider of the electrochemical process to dewater strategic concrete assets such as missile silos, bunkers, underground command centers and tunnels.
The U.S. market for concrete restoration is growing at a rate of 10%- 12% annually and is valued at $34 billion dollars per year. The research done by Dr. Cardenas will play a significant role in this market. It is anticipated that his innovations will be in use within the next 1-2 years.
