Day with arts a good step for students

Rick Hohlt
May 08, 2007

More than 50 students from schools in Lincoln Parish recently experienced “A Day in the Arts”, which provided them with an opportunity to visit art venues that many of them had never seen before.

Amanda Jones, executive director of the North Central Louisiana Arts Council, and Cathi Cox, Project ACHIEVE coordinator, put together a program they designed to enhance the education of area students.

"It basically was the idea of the North Central Louisiana Arts Council, and we wanted to provide more arts opportunities for students within the school system,” Jones said.

Cox got on board because of Project ACHIEVE’s initiative to build partnerships in the community which will help bring resources that accelerate academic achievement and enrich the educational process.

The day began at the Lincoln Parish Library where students got a taste of history with a World War II exhibit provided by the Louisiana Military Museum. Students were able to see artifacts that were once possessions of members of the armed forces who served during World War II.

Next they visited the Dixie Center for the Arts where the work of local artists such as Nick Bustamante and Catherine McVea were on display. The students were able to get a look at the rich historic heritage of the Dixie.

The last stop on the tour was the Louisiana Tech University Enterprise Center, which is currently home of the CHROMA exhibit.

The students had the opportunity to interpret the work of a number of artists, which Cox said contributed to a more enriched educational experience.

"That’s higher order thinking,” Cox said. “So outside of the fact that these kids are being exposed to art, they’re actually working on processing skills that we want all of our teachers doing.”

We want to thank Jones, Cox and all of the people who helped make A Day in the Arts possible. Projects such as this one open the eyes of students and everyone else to the fact that the fine arts hold a solid place next to reading, writing and arithmetic.
