Study Abroad Program

A student may use federal student financial aid to help defray the expenses of study abroad programs, even if the study abroad program is not required for the student’s degree or certificate.  Some of these programs are administered directly by Louisiana Tech University and others are administered by a "host" institution and credits earned in the programs appear on a student's transcript as transfer hours.  These later programs require a Consortium Agreement between Louisiana Tech University and the "host" institution.

A student must have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and all required documents on file in the Louisiana Tech University Financial Aid Office before initiating this process.

Steps for Initiating a Consortium or Study Abroad Agreement:

  1. Submit a memo from your department or dean confirming that the credits earned in the program will transfer back and be counted toward your degree requirements.  This must be submitted to the Louisiana Tech University Financial Aid Office at least six weeks prior to the beginning of the program.

  2. Provide to the Financial Aid Office a brochure or other printed material containing the details of the program which includes a description of the program, dates of enrollment, and contact information at "host" institution.

  3. Sign up for electronic deposit of your refund at Bulldog Online Student System (BOSS)! to ensure prompt delivery of funds.

Steps for Initiating Aid for Tech Study Abroad:

  1. Contact the financial aid study abroad counselor.  Be prepared to provide your name, student ID, contact telephone number, e-mail address, and the name of the Tech program you will be enrolling in.

  2. Meet with the study abroad counselor to discuss the additional aid you will be receiving and sign any additional documents that are necessary.

  3. Sign up for electronic deposit of your refund at Bulldog Online Student System (BOSS)! to ensure prompt delivery of funds.

Reminder:  The Summer quarter is the last quarter in the academic year, and financial aid for Summer will be packaged according to the student's remaining eligibility.  In order to receive federal student aid, students must enroll at least half-time which is 4 hours for undergraduate students and 3 hours for graduate students.
