The Louisiana Coalition for Academic and
Mentoring Programs for Success
has developed a statewide network of
LA GEAR UP Explorers Camps.

What are the LA GEAR UP
Explorers Camps?

These Explorers Camps have four main components:
  1. Tutoring Program
  2. Leadership Training
  3. Math and Science Enrichment Activities
  4. College Life Experiences

Tutoring Program

On the first day of camp, you will take an ACT preparation test. These tests are also being given to all 8th and 10th grade students in Louisiana. The ACT is required for entrance to all Louisiana colleges and universities. Using results of this test, a tutoring program will be developed for each participant to help you succeed on the ACT.

Leadership Training

One of the goals of the Explorers Camps is to help you develop your leadership potential. Students who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential may be offered the opportunity to return to future camps as student leaders and mentors.

Math and Science Enrichment

Not sure which camp you would like to attend? The Explorers Camps allow you to explore a number of different fields of scientific inquiry. Each of the host universities has developed a special Camp specifically for LA GEAR UP students. Read the descriptions, and decide which one YOU would like to explore!

Experience College Life!

During this unique one-week experience, participants will stay in a real dormitory on a university campus. Meals will be available in the Student Center, and participants will have access to all university facilities just as if they were attending college for the first time. Teacher candidates, counselors, teacher cadets, and other college students will serve as counselors and guides during the entire camp. Field trips for each camp are also planned for all participants.

What is the cost?

There is no NO CHARGE for students in LA GEAR UP schools!!
LA GEAR UP provides transportation, living expenses, meals, materials, and all other costs associated with this camp. Participants may choose to bring a limited amount of cash with them for souvenirs, etc. Certificates, T-shirts, and other items are also provided to all participants, but...ENROLLMENT IS LIMITED!!!

Who can attend?

Any student that is currently in the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, or 11th grade in a LA GEAR UP school is eligible to apply for Explorers Camps. If you have never attended a Camp at Louisiana Tech, you should apply to attend one of those Camps this year. If you have attended a Louisiana Tech Camp, then you may select from any of the other camps available.

Remember, if you attended a Louisiana Tech Camp last summer, you MUST submit a completed Individual Career Portfolio with your application in order to be eligible to attend Camp this summer. If you have not already done so, you should get the Portfolio from the Explorers Club Sponsor at your school, your guidance counselor, or school principal. Your application cannot be processed without it!

--- Applications are due May 2, 2008. ---
