Welcome
School District Administrators, School Board Members, Principals, University Professors, or School Board Attorneys: Legal issues affecting the organization and function of the local school and school system have become an increasing concern for teachers, school and central office administrators and attorneys, school board members, and the public. The use of disciplinary procedures in controlling students is an issue that causes great frustration for school boards and school law professionals. In addition, changes in federal and state legislation sometimes add to the confusion of protecting student and employee rights. Louisiana Tech University’s College of Education has made arrangements for the law firm of Hammonds and Sills from Baton Rouge to conduct a 2-day, 11-hour School Law Institute dealing with the above issues and many other matters of concern to those providing leadership for Louisiana’s public schools. The presentation will also feature an update and summarization of the recent 2008 Louisiana Legislative Session. The presentation will be delivered as a team concept. The aim will be to congeal school board presidents, superintendents, or their designees, school administrators, and school board attorneys where policy and execution of policy requires a mastering of federal law, state law, and appreciation for the arduous task of educating all students within the American democratic system. The firm of Hammonds and Sills represents the Louisiana School Boards Association and numerous school boards across the state and receives enumerable daily telephone requests for immediate answers concerning the delivery of regular and special education services and related discipline problems. The above firm has successfully represented school administrators and school boards in federal and state courts on these issues. The Institute will be held Thursday, September 25 and Friday, September 26, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Baton Rouge, LA. The registration fee for all school district attendees is $305 ($330 after August 29) and for attorneys is $320 ($345 after August 29). A buffet lunch will be included in your registration fee. Registration at the reduced price for the Institute must be completed by August 29 by downloading, printing, and returning the Institute Registration Form (located on this Law Day web site) along with a check or money order made payable to the Louisiana Tech University School Law Institute. A block of rooms at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Baton Rouge has been reserved for your convenience. Please ask for the LA Tech School Law Institute special room rate. The Law Day website is www.latech.edu/lawday Finally, for your convenience, an agenda for the Institute, driving directions to the Embassy Suites Hotel, information about the presenters, and all registration forms are available on this website in both MS Word and PDF formats.
