You'd think you could enter any topic as a subject in the catalog just like a keyword. However, a subject search looks for a specialized vocabulary called Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH for short).

If you enter keywords as a subject search, you may not get much back. A good example from our library catalog follows:

  • If you used a subject search for Acquired Immune Deficiency you would get 4 titles.
  • But if you used the LCSH term, AIDS (Disease) you'd see the library has over 900 titles!

That's why we'll begin searching using "keywords" search. Once you get results, you can use the subject terms in blue as links to more focused lists of items.
