Dr. Elizabeth Barfoot Christian, assistant professor of journalism, has
an article in the most recent edition of the international scholarly
journal, The International Journal of Regional and Local Studies. Her
historical research paper, "Crawfish, Better Bigots and Hooch Handlers:
Mississippi Through the Eyes of P.D. East" establishes East's editorship
of /The Petal Paper/ in 1950s Mississippi as a significant yet
overlooked voice for integration. East, who used satire to poke fun at
the political and religious climate in Mississippi, was driven out of
business because of his strong stands for equality among the races.
Christian's work appears in Vol. 4, No. 2, Autumn 2008 edition.
