<title>Louisiana Tech chapter of Black Engineers wins honors</title>
<link>http://www.latech.edu/news/11192009-COES_black_engineers.shtml</link>
<description>The Louisiana Tech Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers received four awards during the national society's recent fall conference in Tulsa, OK.

Recognition included the award for 'Best Advisor Participation,' the award for 'Best Pre-College Initiative Program of the Year,' the award for the best 'Freshman Initiative,' and the award for 'Most Outstanding President.' The Tech chapter also received the award for 'Chapter of the Month' for the month of October because of the Freshmen-Sophomore Retention Pilot Program that the chapter devised and initiated.

Several of the members took advantage of the Career Fair that was held and talked to companies ranging from ExxonMobil and BP, to the FBI.

Mr. Corwin L. Washington, President of Tech's Chapter and one of the award recipients, said that &quot;the Fall Regional Conference was a great motivator to keep excelling in all that we do, because we cannot rest on the victories that we have accomplished nor think that the work is done.  We still have hills to climbs and more to do to fulfill our mission&quot;

Dr. Stan Napper, Dean of the College of Engineering and Science noted that &quot;It is critical that we enlist people from many different learning styles and abilities in engineering design and problem-solving.  I am especially pleased that our chapter conducts so many outreach programs (pre-college and freshman) and that these programs were recognized by the NSBE.&quot;

Louisiana Tech's College of Engineering and Science is a nationally recognized leader in educational innovation and is one of fourteen universities nation-wide to become affiliated with the Center for Advancement on Scholarship in Engineering Education (CASEE), a unit of the National Academy of Engineering.

<title>Tech honors Bernhard as 'Higher Education Hero'</title>
<link>http://www.latech.edu/news/Bernhardhonored.shtml</link>
<description>Louisiana Tech Faculty Senate honored James M. Bernhard Jr. today at the university's 2009 commencement exercises with a resolution declaring him a hero to higher education in the state of Louisiana.

The resolution, which was presented by the University Senate faculty president Debra Blackman, honored Bernhard, as chief executive officer of the Shaw Group, Inc., for his generosity in returning $172.5 million in state incentives allocated for the Shaw Modular Solutions manufacturing project in Lake Charles and requesting all the money go to assuage some of the cuts in higher education.

Last week, Tech's Faculty Senate overwhelmingly passed the resolution to honor Bernhard, Blackman said.  &quot;In these difficult economic times, we need to recognize the importance of higher education, and he's done so in a dramatic way.&quot;

Blackman said higher education in Louisiana is facing cuts this year like it has never seen before and for a company to literally give up state funds to help find a solution requires a hero at its helm.

Bernhard was present to accept the honor and received a standing ovation from an overflow crowd of more than 8,000 at Thomas Assembly Center. With a finger pointed upward, symbolizing Tech No. 1, Bernhard urged graduates to always keep Tech in their hearts and to always keep higher education in Louisiana a priority.

<title>Tech awards diplomas to 836 at spring commencement</title>
<link>http://www.latech.edu/news/spring2009grad.shtml</link>
<description>RUSTON - Phillip Holmes was present with his father, Brandon, as his mother, Jennifer, walked across the stage in the Thomas Assembly Center and became an alumna of Louisiana Tech.

Phillip is 17 months old. He will be a witness to both of his parents graduating from Tech, as Jennifer's husband Brandon plans to graduate this summer.

&quot;It's been hard to go to school with a young child, especially when he was sick,&quot; Jennifer, a Dubach resident, said. &quot;He couldn't go to daycare, and I would have to miss class because he was sick.&quot;

Jennifer sat out one quarter when Phillip was born but said the stress of raising a child and going to college has been worth the challenge of getting her bachelor's degree.

&quot;It's nice to know that I have a college degree,&quot; Jennifer, who majored in speech, said. &quot;We are going to move to New Orleans after Brandon graduates; he's going to have a job down there.&quot;

Eight hundred thirty-six students graduated from Louisiana Tech on Saturday, and Gov. Bobby Jindal served as the commencement speaker, urging graduates to meet four challenges: to keep their minds open, to always be seekers of truth, to avoid greed and to dream big.

&quot;You must fight to keep your minds open,&quot; Jindal said. &quot;It's not easy. People will try to keep you from trying new ideas.

&quot;Be seekers of truth,&quot; he added. &quot;Knowledge by itself is not power. Truth and knowledge is power. America is a country committed to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.&quot;

Jindal urged the graduates that while the economic times of the country as a whole was not overly heartening for them not to be discouraged.

&quot;Louisiana has been impacted with the rest of the country, but we're a strong state and strong people,&quot; he said.

Adding that the graduates should make their life count for something beyond themselves, Jindal said courage was needed to dream big.

&quot;I am an optimist with our state and our country,&quot; he said. &quot;Don't let things take away your zeal to change the world. Look outward. Chase the American dream and create your own version.&quot;

Jessie McCormick, of Normal, Ill., graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and plans to work for Dow Chemical Company in Hahnville.

&quot;I wanted to stay in Louisiana,&quot; McCormick said. &quot;Louisiana has a culture I find unique to every other state.  I've in Louisiana for 99 percent of my life and plan on living here as long as the job allows me to.&quot;

McCormick is joined with her sentiment to reside in Louisiana by graduate Mallory Guin, of Haughton, who said she would stay in Louisiana if the opportunity was offered to her.

&quot;I'm going to work part-time this summer and job search the other part,&quot; Guin, who received a bachelor's degree in merchandising and consumer affairs, said. &quot;I've learned that it's hard to job search when you're at school. So I will be looking for merchandising jobs.&quot;

Guin's decision to major in merchandising and consumer affairs came from her love of the subject, even while knowing that the job market would be competitive.

&quot;I just decided to choose the one I was the best at,&quot; she said. &quot;I would move out of state if I found my dream job. I love Louisiana and would stay here if it was at all possible. I love the way I grew up and would love to stay in the state and pursue a career. You can't find this lifestyle anywhere else.&quot;

<title>Quitman native pegged as new 'Tech Talk' editor</title>
<link>http://www.latech.edu/news/summer2009TechTalkstaff.shtml</link>
<description>RUSTON - The summer Tech Talk staff has been announced, with Quitman native Samantha Horn leading the helm as editor-in-chief.

Horn, a junior journalism major, has served on The Tech Talk as reporter, Student Government Association reporter and news editor.

Rounding out her staff include junior journalism majors Eboni Jaggers, of Haughton, as associate/online editor and Angela Groce, of West Monroe, as managing/sports editor.

&quot;I'm looking forward to working with the new reporters and sharing the things I've learned through Tech Talk with them,&quot; Horn said. &quot;We have a small staff this summer and not a lot of layout experience, so I think we'll all be learning this summer.&quot;

Judith Roberts, Tech Talk faculty adviser, said she has full confidence in Horn and the summer Tech Talk staff.

&quot;This is a good group of reporters and editors,&quot; Roberts said. &quot;They're strong writers, they're dedicated and they enjoy what they do. That's a great combination.&quot;

The summer Tech Talk will be available June 25, and Horn will also be responsible for the Bulldog Survival Guide.
