DESCRIPTION:
17 letters written 1827-1838 to the Secretaries of War and high military officers of the United States. They cover matters relating to the building of the military road from Fort Smith, Arkansas, to Fort Towson on the Red River and thence to Natchitoches, Louisiana. Included are such subjects as surveying and mapping the route, expanses incurred, and difficulties encountered in claiming the land and building and maintaining the road.
