Honors
Program Activities
The
Honors Program is constantly arranging cultural events and activities
for students. In the past Honors students have enjoyed a Butoh dance by
Butoh Master Hikaru Otsubo of Japan, a Roman Convivium led by The
Togaman, Wade Heaton, and a visit to the Majesty of Spain exhibit in
Jackson, MS, among other things. To learn more about past Honors

104, Field Trip to Subiaco Abbey Jan.
18-20, 2006
Honors students and faculty from the two sections
of Hist./Eng. 104 visited Subiaco Abbey, located in Subiaco, Arkansas.
They met monks and learned about church history and monastic life.

»Convivium Romanum IV, November 2, 2005
Wade Heaton, Togaman, made his 3rd annual pilgrimage
Honors Program Convivium Romanum in Wyly Tower and the GTM Courtyard.
Honors students and faculty enjoyed the Togaman's talk on the toga and
traditional Roman dishes, including--yes, we're serious--goat, prepared
by Dr. Bruce Magee. Dr. Magee maintains a Roman
Convivium webpage with just about everything you ever wanted to
know about the toga, Roman parties, Roman cuisine, and all other things

»Meet the Faculty Party, Oct. 20, 2005
Honors
students met at Dr. Kaczvinsky's house from 6-8pm for the annual "Meet
the Faculty" Party. Students enjoyed free dinner (red beans and rice,
ham, and side dishes) and good conversation as they were able to
discuss upcoming classes with the Honors faculty.The schedule
for the winter
classes was available.

203/204 Field Trip to Jackson, The Glory of Baroque Dresden May 6, 2004
Honors
students from the Modern and American Civilization travelled to
Jackson's Museum of Art to view the special exhibit on The Glory of
Baroque Dresden. The trip was meant to expand the Modern Civ's
student's awareness of art and culture of the 17th century as well as
the study of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five in the American Civ.

Honors students and faculty from the two
sections of Hist./Eng. 104 visited Subiaco Abbey, located in Subiaco,
Arkansas. They met monks and learned about church history and monastic

the Faculty" Gumbo Party Nov. 6, 2003
The annual "Meet the Faculty" was hosted
by Dr. Gary Zumwalt. Students from Honors Geology 111: Introduction to
Oceanography made a chicken and sausage gumbo and faculty brought side
dishes. After feasting, students and faculty attended Dmitri
Buzarovski's world premiere concert at Howard Auditorium, compliments
of Dr. Rea, Vice-President of Academic Affairs.

»Spring Crawfish Boil May 8, 2003
Honors students and faculty gathered at Dr. Gary Zumwalt's
house to enjoy some juicy crawfish spiced and boiled by the
program's own Dr. Glenn Ingram. Everyone had a grand time
(except for the crawfish).

Arkansas Feb. 7-9, 2003
The Geology 111 Honors class took a field trip
to the beautiful quartz mines in Hot Springs, Arkansas to examine
quartz crystal formations.

Civilization classes took a field trip to Subiaco Abbey in Subiaco,
Arkansas, where they met with monks and discussed monastic life. Visit

The Togaman Returns! Wade Heaton made his
second trip to Louisiana Tech to give a new talk on the toga in Wyly
Tower Auditorium. Students and faculty enjoyed delicious Roman food in
the GTM Courtyard afterward.

»Biospeleology Field Trip to Alexander Cave
April 26, 2002
Honors students in the Biospeleology class took
their second field trip to Alexander Cave in northern Arkansas where
they were guided by local caver Dave Epperson on a long journey
beginning with a thirty foot chimney climb into the cave and
culminating with lunch in the "Wedding Cake" Room. Dr. Wakeman of the
Biology Department created a webpage for the class' exploration where you can
find each student's description of his/her experience along with some
great photos of the cave.

»Biospeleology Field Trip to Wolf/Bear Cave
April 6, 2002
Honors students in the Biospeleology class
took their first field trip to Wolf/Bear Cave, one of Louisiana's few
caves, in the Kisatchie National Forest. Students re-mapped the cave,
which had previously been mapped more than twenty years ago, and
explored its formation. Dr. Wakeman of the Biology Department created a webpage for the class where you can find more
details about this expedition.

»Convivium Romanum I Oct.
25, 2001
Wade Heaton, Togaman, made his first of what
were to become annual journies to Louisiana Tech University. He gave a
talk on the toga to Honors students and faculty in the Student Center.
Afterward, everyone enjoyed fine Roman cuisine.

»Butoh Master Hikaru Otsubo Visits Oct. 10-13, 2001
Renown Japanese Butoh master Hikaru Otsubo
paid a visit to the Art and Culture of Japan Honors class. He spoke
with students about Japanese culture and Butoh dancing, and, due to a
larger crowd than was expected, gave two stunning performances of his
original Butoh dance, "Icarus," to the utter amazement of all present.
Hikaru-san then took questions from the audience. His visit was a real
treat for Honors students and the townspeople of Ruston alike. Dr.
Kenneth Robbins, who brought Hikaru to Ruston and taught the Art and
Culture of Japan Honors class, wrote an article on Butoh and on Hikaru's visit.
»Honors Field Trip to the Majesty of Spain
Spring 2001
Honors students and faculty enjoyed a field
trip to the Majesty of Spain exhibit in Jackson, MS, where they viewed the royal
collection of the Museo del Prado & Patrimonio Nacional.
