History of The Louisiana Tech IronDawgs

The Louisiana Tech Powerlifting Team was started by Dr. Billy Jack Talton in the fall of 1974 at the request of five Louisiana Tech students.  The team has averaged 35 members a year, including both men and women since its formation.  The men’s team and women’s teams have won 16, and 14 national collegiate championships, respectively.  In addition to producing numerous Collegiate All-Americans, Tech lifters have also participated in AAU National meets, USAPL Senior National meets, USAPL Junior Nationals, IPF Junior Worlds, IPF Sub-Junior Worlds, and the Good Will Games.  Tech lifters have competed in sixteen different states and in twelve foreign countries:  Australia, Czech Republic, South Africa, Russia, Slovakia, Hungary, Indonesia, India, Taiwan, Bulgaria, Canada, and Mexico.  In May, 2006 the Louisiana Tech men and women won their 16th and 14th national titles respectively in Miami, FL, making a total of 30 national collegiate titles. In the spring of 2001, Dr. Billy Jack Talton retired as head coach and Professor Emeritus, but still actively serves as Team Mentor.  Head coaching responsibilities now belong to Truman State University graduate and Powerlifting Coach, Zac Cooper.

This year’s team of 40 lifters is pro-active and readily training for the 2007 Collegiate Nationals in Killeen, TX.  With the added talent of incoming freshman lifters from Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi, the '06-'07 Louisiana Tech Powerlifting Team is united in spirit, purpose, and heart with one goal in mind... winning the Collegiate National Powerlifting Championships.
