Requirements
Lifting
ability is a necessary
and desired for
future team members; however other important factors such as a positive
attitude,
responsibility and willingness to participate in all fund raising
projects of
the team are also factors. Outstanding female and male
lifters are
equally sought, as the team is coed. There is a men's and
women’s team, but
this distinction is not evident because the group functions as one
unit, and
team unity is heavily emphasized. Louisiana Tech Powerlifters
are
required to be students in good standing and pursue at least 8 credit
hours per
quarter. To be admitted, students must also meet the
University selective
admission policy. Out of state students must pay an out of
state fee
quarterly which may be waived if certain qualifications are
met (listed below). Powerlifting
scholarships are not awarded by Louisiana Tech or any other university
in the
United States. This is due to the fact that at the
current time,
powerlifting is not an NCAA sanctioned sport. However,
Louisiana Tech does
provide several benefits to offset the personal expenses related to
team
participation that are not available at other universities.
More
information about Tech will be provided at your request.
Why Tech?
Powerlifting
at the college level is classified as a club sport with limited
funding.
In spite of this limitation, Louisiana Tech has operated a Powerlifting
program
successfully for thirty-two years (1974-2006). There is no
other
University in the United States with a record of greater consistency of
success
in collegiate powerlifting than the Louisiana Tech program.
Success is
measured by the number of national championships, 30, the number of
first team
All-Americans, the number of national collegiate record holders, and
the number
of Tech lifters chosen to represent the United States in international
competition such as the Junior World Championships and Sub-Junior World
Championships. Tech ranks at the top of every one of these categories.

Is there any form of scholarship/financial aid available to LA Tech Powerlifters?
You will not find a single College or University across the United States that
will offer any scholarship(s) for Collegiate Powerlifting. This means that because the NCAA doesn't recognize Powerlifting, schools have no
financial ability to offer scholarships to outstanding HS Powerlifters as a
means of recruiting athletes into their programs. However, incoming freshman can have their out-of-state tuition waived if certain
pre-determined criterion are met. While this may not sound like very much money... out-of-state tuition waivers
usually result in around a 40-50% reduction of total tuition cost.
The criteria for incoming freshmen are as follows:
Freshmen
Category A (Students with fewer than 18 semester hours of college credit)
1) ACT composite of at least 23 (SAT 1060),
and
2) High School GPA of at least 2.5 (4.0 scale),
and
3) Have no need for remedial courses, and
4) First period of enrollment in the State of
Louisiana and at Tech is Spring 2002 or later.
Retention of A scholarships requires full-time enrollment (8 or more
credit hrs per quarter), and a cumulative and quarter GPA of at least
2.00.
