Allen Eskew

2:00PM, in Wyly Auditorium

We have rescheduled the the School of Architecture’s April lecture of Allen Eskew.

The lecture will now be held on Thursday April 9th, 2:00PM, in Wyly Auditorium.

As the founding director of Eskew+Dumez+Ripple Architects, New Orleans-based architectural and urban design firm, R. Allen Eskew has earned an impressive reputation for his ability to collaborate with designers, clients, and neighborhoods alike; to initiate progressive design that is not only environmentally responsive, but also creative and vibrant. With an extensive repertoire of urban planning and a passion for the rich, architectural heritage of the Gulf South, he was the likely candidate to spearhead the recovery initiatives after the destruction by Hurricane Katrina. Eskew’s design studio utilizes the unique cultural and architectural heritage of New Orleans as an archetype for design and planning of national range and recognition.

For more information about the firm, please visit the website: http://www.studioedr.com

The title of Mr. Eskew’s presentation will be “Survivable Sustainability: The Rebuilding of New Orleans.”

The lecture is free and open to the public. This lecture is available for CEUs.

The end of this month (April 25th), CDAC is having a 5K Awareness run through the South of California neighborhood (SOCA Sprint 5K).

WHY WE RUN…

Even though Lincoln Parish is the most highly educated parish in the state, the poverty level in Ruston is 20% above the national average. One of the impoverished areas in the city is the neighborhood South of California Avenue. Most residents in Ruston have forgotten about this rapidly depleting area because it seems to be hidden from view. However, with community awareness and support, this area could become a vibrant neighborhood once again.

Louisiana Tech University’s School of Architecture is partnering with thecommunity to improve the impoverished neighborhood South of California Avenue (SOCA). Our goal is to improve the physical, social, living, and working conditions for the residents, by envisioning and building projects that will serve as
agents of positive change in the community. We would also like to strengthen and nurture the connection between the community and the resources of the city.

This quarter, we are continuing our mission of opening the eyes of Ruston’s citizens and leaders, while also building lasting relationships with the residents of the SOCA neighborhood. Their input and opinions about the future of their neighborhood is critical for the success of this long-term effort to improve the community. In order to do this, we are hosting this 5K Run through the neighborhood. The run will allow participants and supporters to see the current living conditions of the neighborhood. Rather than simply driving through, a slow pace through the meandering streets will give a different viewpoint. The race will start at Mays Chapel Church and end at Duncan Park. We are hosting a block party at the end of the race for runners, supporters, and residents. This event will include food, music, games, and the opportunity to interact with residents of this
neighborhood.

We hope that you will join us on the journey to improve this part of Ruston. Wecannot do it without your support.

are the primary means by which we understand form, space, and materials. We, as observers and participants, interact with the built environment through our visual, auditory, and tactile senses. The third-year students have been working on six architectural installations that attempt to capture the phenomenological information of an existing building.
