el dorado inc was founded in 1996 to explore the intersection of architecture, fabrication and art. Interaction with artists has been an integral part of this practice beginning with the el dorado inc gallery which hosted over two dozen shows and welcomed over 10,000 visitors.

After closing the gallery in 1998 to focus more directly on architecture and fabrication, dialogue with artists continued through working together on projects. Essentially el dorado offered artists an opportunity to work outside of the studio. They, in turn, offered el dorado another perspective through which to view problem solving. In 2002, the firm¹s ongoing working relationship with Kansas City-based artist James Woodfill was formalized as Elwood, LLC. Together, Elwood has completed half a dozen built works including PULSE, Freighthouse, MovingInMovingOut and Groove Tubes. Art in America recognized PULSE as one of the top 25 public art projects in the US in 2005.

Currently, el dorado is working with Kansas City-based mk12 on the Wyandotte Bridge and with Derek Porter on the Troost Avenue Bridge. el dorado provides ongoing assistance to the Art in the Loop program in downtown Kansas City where Kansas City Art Institute graduates are given opportunities to create significant two- and three-dimensional outdoor installations.

El dorado’s most recent claim-to-fame is feature in DWELL Magazine (Oct 06), which discusses their recent work (including the 5 Delaware Loft project), their dynamic partnership, and good local bar-b-que.

Doug Stockman graduated from Kansas State University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Architecture. Doug serves as a principal and the Director of Finance for the firm. Doug and his wife, Mandy, are expecting their first baby in the spring.

Jamie Darnell also graduated from Kansas State University 1989 with a Bachelor of Architecture. Jamie’s interest in steel fabrication helped to jumpstart the firm. He serves as principal and the Director of Technology. He is also the only red-haired person in the firm (that's what their website says, anyway).
