Craig Dykers co-founder
of the design firm Snohetta, located in Oslo, Norway, wil present a lecture
on the work of his firm
Snohetta
Established
in 1989 in Oslo, Norway, Snøhetta established its New York office in 2004
-- the same year it was awarded the commission for the National September
11th Memorial Museum and Pavilion at the World Trade Centre. Its international
practice emphasizes site-specific and environmentally responsible design
solutions that “enhance...qualities of place and create diverse and rich
architectural experiences.” Recent and current work includes the Lillehammer
Winter Olympics Art Museum, Norway; Norwegian Embassy, Berlin; Norwegian
National Opera, Oslo; and the Wolfe Centre for the Arts, Bowling Green
State University, Ohio. The office has won numerous awards, recently earning
the prestigious Mies van der Rohe award for Norwegian National Opera,
and winning the coveted Aga Khan award in 2004. In 2002, the firm completed
the New Library of Alexandria in Egypt, the result of winning an UNESCO-organized
design competition which accepted over 1400 international entries.
According to the firm’s website, “Architecture cannot be contained simply
by rules of order, instead it must accommodate the restless mind of human
society. It must accept association developed by larger numbers of characters
beyond the discipline of the architect.”
A monograph of the firm, entitled Snøhetta Works, was published in 2009
by Lars Müller Publishers.
This lecture is also available for CEUs.
