Alfred
Zollinger was trained as a precision machinist in Switzerland,
where he worked at Rolex S.A. He studied architecture at Rhode
Island School of Design, and completed his post-professional
studies at Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he was the lead designer
and project manager on a number of widely published design/build
projects completed by the Cranbrook Architecture Office. Zollinger's
interest in making as a mode of critical inquiry characterizes
his current practice, Matter, which he cofounded in 2001. Matter
has completed a range of interior projects including exhibition
designs for numerous institutions including the Cooper-Hewitt
Museum and the National Building Museum, in addition to several
residential projects. He has taught at the ETH in Zurich, RISD,
and at Parsons since 2006.
