Course Description

This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of cartographic techniques and to the basic principles of spatial analysis.  By the end of the quarter students should be able to construct a basic map using one or more computer software packages.  Students should also be able to apply several basic statistical and spatial analytical tools to help solve "real-world" problems.

Required Materials

Whitener, Angela; Paula Loree and Larry Daniel. 1999.
Inside MapInfo Professional
OnWord Press: Albany, NY
ISBN: 1-56690-186-3

Classroom Activities

The nature of the course will be dependent on the preparedness of the students to begin this class, the creativity of the students and the instructor.  I envision that there will be a "lecture" period, where concepts and principles of spatial analysis, GIS and cartography are introduced and discussed, followed by a "lab" time, where students will remain in class or go off on their own to fulfill the required assignments.

Attendance

In accordance with university policy, attendance will be taken each class session and used to aid in your quarter-end evaluation.

Major Exams

There will be two exams during the quarter. The second exam will not be comprehensive. The format of the test will vary according to the type of material covered.

Make-up Exams. . If a person misses an exam and is able to produce a valid excuse for his or her absence then he or she will be allowed to take an equivalent exam within one week of their return to class. Failure to produce a valid excuse for a missed exam will result in a grade of 0 for that exam.

Research Project

A research project undertaken from a geographic perspective will be due at the end of the semester. Details regarding the style and content of this project will be forthcoming.

Obligations

  1. Attendance will be taken at every session in accordance with University policy. Students are expected to arrive on time for class and to remain until dismissed. Failure to attend class or to be less than punctual will influence your grade.
  2. Food, drink and tobacco products are not allowed inside the classroom.  Even careful students can make big messes and a can of Coke can ruin a computer quickly.

Evaluation

Grades will be determined by your performance on the various assignments and tests as well as your attendance/participation where appropriate.

Tentatively the following grading formula will apply:
