440: Economic Geography. 0-3-3. A spatial
perspective is used to examine economic principles. Topics include
transportation, retail and industrial site location analysis and the
political/space economy.
Required Materials
Bryson et. al. (eds). 1999. The Economic
Geography Reader. New York: Wiley.
Classroom Activities
Class time will be split between discussion of assigned
readings and practical, hands-on lab situations. Generally, I will try to use
lectures to direct your attention to significant matters assigned in the
readings or to supplement readings. On Fridays the class will meet in the cartography
lab to do applied Economic Geography (GTM 137-135).
Pop Quizzes
On occasions during the course of the quarter a "pop
quiz" may be administered. Such quizzes will cover material covered in the
previous day's lecture or information from assigned readings. They are designed
not to be punitive but to encourage you to read the assignments in advance of
lecture.
Major Exams
There will be two exams during the quarter. The second exam
will not be comprehensive. The format of the test will vary according to
the type of material covered.
Make-up Exams. . If a person misses an exam
and is able to produce a valid excuse for his or her absence then he or she
will be allowed to take an equivalent exam within
one week of their return to class. Failure to produce a valid excuse
for a missed exam will result in a grade of 0 for that exam.
Writing Assignments
Writing is required in each of my classes. Details
regarding the style and content of this project can be found by clicking on the
hyperlink below.
Attendance and Classroom Obligations.
1.
In accordance with university policy, attendance will be
taken each class session and used as an aid in your quarter-end evaluation.
2.
Students are expected to arrive on time for class and to
remain until they are dismissed. Failure to attend class or to be less than
punctual will influence your grade.
3.
Food, drink and tobacco products are not allowed inside the classroom. These products
create extra work for the janitorial staff and I consider transgressions
against this simple courtesy a sign of disrespect.
Because irregular attendance can become a chronic problem
that degrades the learning environment, I require students to sign a course
contract, which essentially states that they have read and understood the
course policies and that they agree to follow them. Click here to access the course contract
Evaluation
Grades will be determined by your performance on the
various assignments and tests as well as your attendance/participation where
appropriate.
