LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY SENATE

Volume 12       January 2003                Number 5

 

1.                  Call to Order:  Norman Pumphrey

The January 27, 2003 meeting of the University Senate was called to order at 4:02 p.m. in Prescott Memorial Library, Room 334, by President Norman Pumphrey.

 

2.                  Roll Call:  Rose Butler

Senators absent from the meeting were Dawn Erickson, John McKillip, Jim Dickson, Tony Grice, Ben Choi, Neven Simicevic, Carey Cox, Frank Ji, Tianhong Cui, Peggy Carter, Don Braswell, Tim Morse, Susan Elkins, and Amy Stegall.

 

3.                  Adoption of Agenda:  Norman Pumphrey

A motion was made to accept the agenda.  The motion was seconded and approved.

 

4.                  Adoption of the December 16, 2002 minutes.

A motion was made to accept the minutes.  The motion was seconded and approved.

 

5.                  Announcements:  Norman Pumphrey

Administrative and Planning Council met on January 23, 2003.  It was announced that Tech has an increase of over 700 students from last year.

 

There will be an increase in the energy surcharge for the Spring 2003 quarter due to the cost of gas going up.  The light fixtures on campus will be replaced next summer.  These fixtures are more energy efficient.

 

Corey Stegall reported that there will be a $250,000 shortage on professorships and chairs this year.  Next year is expected to be worse

 

Next year’s budget will be very lean.  Dr. Reneau reported that $770,000 was taken back from the budget this year, but that this was done without affecting the budgets of the academic units.  He also states that to increase funding, Louisiana Tech must become a Doctoral II university. 

 

To increase funding, LA Tech must become a Doctoral II university. 

 

There is a 4.5% increase of first-time freshmen applications.

 

Jerry Drewett is investigating getting voice mail.  Voice mail will cost an additional $20,000 using an internet-based system.

 

Jim King reported on new housing.  The closing out on the purchase of land, which runs in a narrow strip from the railroad tracks north past the baseball field continuing across Alabama past the tennis courts, is going on now.  2004 is the projected opening of the new dormitories on this land. 

 

Kidd is to be torn down this summer.

 

Noel-Levitz – Retention rates at Louisiana Tech are in the high 70’s.  Norman Pumphrey and representatives of each college and admissions will meet Tuesday and Wednesday with the Noel-Levitz representative to discuss developing a retention plan.

 

School Colors Committee – Pantone Reflex Blue C and Pantone Red 185C are the official colors for the university.

 

Others – Steve Graves reported that the company doing the new evaluation forms contacted him.  He will report next month on any information he learns concerning the new evaluation process.

 

6.                  Treasurer’s report  - Susan Elkins

No report.

 

7.                  New Business

Post-Tenure Review – Norman Pumphrey will talk with Dr. Rea on the implementation and rules regarding post-tenure review.  He will report back at next month’s meeting.

 

Academic Integrity Honor Code – Beginning Fall 2004, this will be set into place.  This apparatus will deal with students cheating.  Students will have due process.  This code will protect the university from lawsuits. Input or questions regarding this matter was requested by Rick Simmons.
