MINUTES

 

LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY SENATE

Volume 11            December 2001            Number 4

 

1.                  Call to Order:  Helen Baxter

 

The December 17, 2001 meeting of the University Senate was called to order at 4:02 p.m. in Prescott Memorial Library, Room 334, by President Helen Baxter.

 

2.                  Roll Call:  Rose Butler

Senators absent from the meeting were Philip Coane, Dianne Douglas, Dan Erickson, Barbara Garner, Steve Graves, Susan Hilton, Frank Ji, Winston McVea, Mark Murphey, Randy Parker, Steve Patton, Bill Ray, Roger Shelor, Maurice Tassin and Dena Westerfield.

 

3.                  Adoption of Agenda:  Helen Baxter

A motion was made to accept the agenda.  The motion was accepted and approved.

 

4.                  Adoption of the November 12, 2001 minutes.

A motion to accept the minutes was made.  The motion was accepted, and the minutes were approved.

 

5.                  Announcements:  Helen Baxter

Library Cookbook – Anita Dotson informed the Senate as to where the Library Cookbook can be purchased and the cost.

 

6.                  Treasurer’s report

A motion was made to accept the Treasurer’s report.  The motion was accepted.

 

7.                  Old Business

a.       Faculty Advisory Council – Helen Baxter asked the members if the Senate should advertise throughout the colleges for a faculty member to represent the monthly meetings in Baton Rouge.  The members agreed to this proposal.

 

b.      Teacher’s Evaluation Form Revision Committee Update – No report

 

c.       Tech Parking Committee Report – Rick Simmons

Rick Simmons reported that the Senate has been asked to vote on whether to bring several issues to the Parking Committee.  The first issue: should there be an increase in parking tickets.  The second issue: should students be brought before the Judicial Committee after the student has received 5 parking tickets.  After discussing these two issues, the Senate voted to ask the Parking Committee to have students appear before the Judicial Committee after receiving 5 parking tickets.

 

d.      Tree Memorial Update – Helen Baxter

After discussion, the Senate agreed to spend $300 for a tree and plaque to honor the victims of September 11.

 

8.                  New Business

a.       Administrative and Planning Council Update – Helen Baxter

Toliver Hall,and the Ropp Center are in the process of renovation and improvement.  Hale Hall is in the final stages of planning in its rebuilding.  After renovation, the Ropp Center will available to the Senate for its monthly meetings.

 

Tech is now in the Tier II status.  As a result, associate degrees will no longer be offered at Tech after 2005.

 

SACS – Dr. Terri McConathy will serve as accreditation committee head for the university in seeking accreditation from SACS in its next review.

 

ACT 455 – Dr. Reneau will address this issue in January and will form a committee to address the issue. 

 

Humanitarian Bowl – This game will be on television and will be the only football game on at the time it is aired.  Tech will have ads on during the game.

 

Helen Baxter wished everyone a safe and happy holiday before adjourning.

 

A motion was made to adjourn.  Motion passed, and the meeting was adjourned at 5:05 p.m.
