These categories include:

  • Eisenhower's diary entries and dictated correspondence
  • Memos of telephone conversations
  • Official White House staff memoranda, reports, correspondence, and summaries of congressional correspondence
  • "Toner Notes", two-three page summaries of the activities and programs of the various executive agencies.

John Foster Dulles and Christian A. Herter
Among the most complete documentary records of American foreign policy during the Cold War are the files of the Eisenhower State Department, especially the papers of John Foster Dulles (Secretary of State, 1953-1959) and Christian A. Herter (Undersecretary of State, 1957-1959; Secretary of State, 1959-1961). The files offer a source of primary data on the formation and implementation of American foreign policy in the Eisenhower years.

This series includes the outgoing correspondence and memoranda of the secretaries of state and their staffs which document how the State Department interacted with national and international leaders. The series also contains the working papers and documents, prepared for internal State Department use, that unfold the debate and discussion within the State Department on the formation and implementation of foreign policy.

This series collects the official communications between the State Department and the White House from 1953-1961, as well as memoranda on meetings between the President and either Dulles or Herter during the Eisenhower administration. Included are Cabinet briefing materials, official memoranda and correspondence, working papers prepared for White House use, and State Department drafts of and comments on presidential correspondence and speeches.

This collection contains the minutes of nearly all the telephone conversations of Dulles and Herter as secretaries of state, including extensive minutes of communications with the President.
