Whats a Walk for education The primary goal is to increase the awareness of the opportunities available through education particularly in the STEM fields, and to shatter the myths of African American in Math, Science, Engineering and other technologies. However, the information would not be limited to Engineering and Science as other fields of work are very much valued. Who would Benefit from "A Walk for Education"? Students of all ages. What will we do? Volunteers would walk door to door in a pre-dominantly underrepresented minority community distributing information about are college admission,concerning, area vocational schools, GED, SAT/ACT, NSBE resources,and financial aid. Who can Participate? Anyone who believes that Education is a good thing: a NSBE member, a Greek sorority and fraternity member, a company representative, a church member, and a college graduate and as well as a non-college graduate. All are needed in this effort. TORCH Technical OutReach Community Help (T.O.R.C.H.) is NSBE’s community service initiative. We aim to use out technical backgrounds to positively impact the community and achieve the following objectives. Objectives:
T.O.R.C.H. is an umbrella program of NSBE that encompasses outreach activities that impact non-NSBE members and NSBE members alike, especially pre-college youth in the Black community. Although increasing membership may be a result of these activities, T.O.R.C.H. programs seek to provide services ahead of promoting membership. T.O.R.C.H. programs are divided into the following branches:
Insight to Engineering Insights to Engineering Workshops provide an in-depth view on the different engineering curriculums, companies, jobs, etc. Speakers for this workshop series would explain what they do or did at their job or showcase their company to students. Students are to receive information that will help make after college career plans or summer internship or co-op plans. Students are also allowed to bring their resumes to showcase themselves and to network with the speakers. |
