Rules
1. Your “machine” must have at least 20 steps. Each team is responsible for having 5 copies of their STEP FORM for the judges at the time of judging!
2. It must fit on a flat area and be able to be performed in an area of 15ft by 15ft and no more than 10ft tall. It can be either free standing and/or sit on a table. (Two tables will be furnished for each team)
3. It must take no more than 10 minutes to complete the task from start to finish.
4. You must have at least one representative there from 11-3 on the day of presentations.
5. A machine must not imply profane, indecent, or lewd expressions.
6. A machine may not incorporate any live animal.
7. A penalty will be assessed for any human intervention on a machine in motion.
8. Any loose or flying objects must remain within the set boundaries of the machine.
9. No combustible fluids, explosives, open flames, or hazardous materials will be allowed without approval from team’s faculty sponsor AND contest board.
10. Each team is responsible for the security of its own machine, but intentional destructive action against other machines is cause for disqualification.
11. Teams are responsible for removing their machine and related debris immediately following the announcement of the winners.
12. No machine may be taken down or disassembled until the contest is over.

Judging and Voting
- Judging will be on Wednesday April 14, 2004 (11:00 – 1:00). Each team will sign up for a time and must have at least 2 members present. Any team who does not abide by the rules will be disqualified (See Rules). Below is an outline of the competition.
Wednesday April 14, 2004
- 8:00 – 10:30 Team Check-in and Set-Up
- 11:00 – 2:30 Student Ballot Voting
- 11:00 – 1:00 Official Judging (By Sign-Up)
- 3:00 Announcement of Winners
- Each team’s score will be calculated in the following way:
Number of steps – 20 pts. max
Use of common objects – 20 pts. max
Presentation of a theme – 10 pts. max
- Students will vote on their top three favorite machines by ballots on Wednesday April 14, 2004 (11:00 – 2:30)
Awards and Prizes
- 1st Place ($100 and Plaque)
- 2nd Place (Small Plaque)
- 3rd Place (Small Plaque)
- Trophy
- Used as a tie breaker

Suggestions
Do not spend a lot of money. Use common objects as often as possible.
Follow a theme that represents your organization. For example, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers might choose to use gears, pistons, and other car parts.
Start by brainstorming objects that you can use in the machine.
