Who we
are...
Tau Beta Pi is the
only engineering honor society representing the entire engineering
profession. It is the nation's second oldest honor society, founded at Lehigh University in 1885 to recognize students
of distinguished scholarship and exemplary character. There are now
collegiate chapters at 221 U.S. colleges and universities,
active alumnus chapters in 16 regions across the United States and a total initiated
membership of 429,000.
Louisiana Tech University's Tau Beta Pi chapter,
Louisiana Gamma, has a notable history. The Louisiana Gamma chapter has
received Honorable Mention for the Outstanding Chapter Award in 1958-59,
1959-60, and 1970-71. This award, now known as the R.C. Matthews
Outstanding Chapter Award, is based on how well chapter service projects
fulfill the objectives of Tau Beta Pi and on the quality and promptness of
chapter reports to the national headquarters. More recently, the chapter
received Honorable Mention for the R.H. Nagel Most Improved Chapters Award in
1999-2000, and the Louisiana Gamma chapter received the R.H. Nagel Most
Improved Chapters Award in 2000-2001. This award recognizes major
improvement in chapter development, including project work and headquarters
reports, in one year compared with previous years. The chapter also won
the Secretaries Commendation Award in 1999-2000, 2000-2001, and 2001-2002, as well as
winning the Project Award in 2000-2001.
